[DMANET] Full-time tenured Lecturer position in Theoretical Computer Science at Aix-Marseille University

Dear colleagues,

Aix-Marseille University announces the opening of a full-time tenured position in Theoretical Computer Science at the Lecturer/Assist. Prof. level (referred to as "Maître de conférences" in French). The starting is September the 1st, 2018. In practice a necessary condition for applying is to be fluent in French.

The recruited Lecturer will be affiliated to the LIS (Laboratory of Computer and System Sciences). The LIS is a new research lab. just born from the merger of the LIF (Fundamental Computer Science lab, http://www.lif.univ-mrs.fr) and the LSIS (Information Science and Systems lab, http://www.lsis.org). More precisely, the Lecturer will join one of the nine research groups of the "Computation axis" (referred to as "Pôle Calcul" in French) of the LIS, with a clear priority towards the Natural Computation research group (http://cana.lis-lab.fr). The detailed profile of the position is given below, at the end of the email.

Important deadline: The French national synchronized session for applying to Lecturer positions is from February the 22nd to March the 30th, 2018. Research: Theoretical Computer Science / Natural Computation

The recruited Lecturer ("Maître de conférences") will join one of the nine research groups of the Computation axis of the LIS. A priority will be given to the Natural Computation group (the CANA research group).
Natural Computation is a field of Computer Science based on the links between Computer Science and other disciplines, mainly Physics and Biology. On the one hand, it aims at abstracting natural phenomena in order to develop new computational paradigms, or deepening the study of well-known nature-inspired models of computation (e.g. automata networks, cellular automata...). On the other hand, it aims at using these models of computation in order to achieve a better understanding of the phenomena at hand, with the hope to unravel some of the underlying fundamental laws.
The CANA research group, in particular, seeks to capture at the formal level some of the fundamental paradigms of Theoretical Biology and Physics, via the models and approaches of Theoretical Computer Science and Discrete Mathematics. These approaches and their underlying methods, that we develop also per se, rest on the study of interacting entities. Most often in the models that we study, each of the constitutive entities is elementary and can only take a finite number of states. Moreover, they interact only locally with respect to the network on which they lie, in discrete time steps. In spite of their apparent simplicity, these discrete models are able to capture the essence of the dynamics of numerous natural systems, upon which they shed a new light. For instance, thanks to their high level of abstraction, these models provide a qualitative representation of biological regulation networks, of particle propagation in quantum physics, or even of the emergence of waves in sandpiles. Beyond their ability to grasp natural phenomena, the models are also being studied for their own sake, in terms of their intrinsic dynamical, computability and complexity properties.
We are looking for candidates whose activities are centred on these aspects, and having a good knowledge of discrete models. High-level external applications with a strong background in Theoretical Computer Science and a taste for interactions with Life Sciences or Physics are particularly welcome.

Teaching:

In France, the teaching load of a Lecturer ("Maître de conférences") is of 192 effective hours a year, composed of courses and practical lessons. The recruited MCF will be involved in teaching undergraduates, and graduate students eventually (i.e. at Licence and Master levels).
